Airbags protect passengers during frontal crashes and are designed to work together with seat belts. But airbags and seat belts were designed to protect average-sized adult males. That's why airbags pose a serious risk to children riding in the front seat. Safety belts and age/size appropriate child safety seats are the best protection in these types of crashes. Ford built an experimental fleet of cars with airbags in 1971, followed by General Motors in 1973 on Chevrolet vehicles. In 1974 General Motors adopted the technology for other brands like Buick, Cadillac and Oldsmobile, and offered dual airbags with two-stage deployment, and called them "Air Cushion Restraint System".
